Greymouth, the wild West at it's best
Its position at the mouth of the Grey River gives Greymouth its name. Although an industrial town at its roots, Greymouth has some pretty spots and provides plenty to do both in town and in the area. The surrounding area is New Zealand’s wild West Coast, which holds the country’s most untouched scenery. Greymouth is a small town so it is easy to get around. The town centre has some basic shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs, and is also the home of Monteith’s Brewing Co. This is a must-visit spot for beer lovers! Jade is another important industry in the town, known locally as Greenstone. Jewellery made from this beautiful stone is sold by several artisans in town. To the east and west of Greymouth are coastal highways which are gorgeous scenic drives, where the mountains meet the Tasman sea. Greymouth’s coastal suburbs of Blaketown and South Beach have surf beaches, and there are more of these up and down the coast. One particularly interesting attraction near Greymouth are the pancake rocks at Punakaiki, a very unique geological formation. Shantytown is another, a heritage park consisting of a recreated gold mine town which tells the story of the Gold Rush in the Greymouth area. Greymouth is somewhat of a gateway to the West Coast, so if you find your way down to that part of New Zealand it is the perfect starting point for a Wild West road trip! It is also a beautifully scenic drive from there over the Arthur’s Pass to Christchurch.
